HEARTS FOR STREET DOGS
About Us
Hearts for Street Dogs was created to address an often-overlooked reality: many unhoused individuals share their lives with beloved pets who rely on them for safety, companionship, and emotional support. Our organization was founded by a group of compassionate women who recognized the urgent need for pet-focused outreach within the Reno community.
We believe that pets are family. For people experiencing homelessness, their animals are often their most consistent source of comfort, protection, and unconditional love. Unfortunately, limited access to shelters, veterinary care, food, and basic supplies places both people and their pets at risk.
Hearts for Street Dogs exists to help bridge this gap.
Our Mission
Our mission is to support unhoused pet owners by providing essential supplies and resources that promote the health, safety, and well-being of their animals. By meeting people where they are, we aim to reduce suffering, preserve the human–animal bond, and prevent pets from being surrendered to already overcrowded shelters.
Our Approach
We focus on practical, compassionate outreach that prioritizes dignity and respect. Our work includes distributing food and essential pet supplies, responding to urgent needs during extreme weather conditions, and collaborating with local businesses and volunteers to strengthen community support for unhoused pets.
Rather than separating families, we work to keep people and their pets together by making daily life safer and more manageable.
Looking Ahead
Hearts for Street Dogs is committed to expanding outreach efforts and strengthening partnerships within the Reno area. With continued community support, we aim to reach more pets, respond more effectively to urgent needs, and advocate for compassionate solutions for unhoused pet owners.
